John Wick 4: $73M+ Sunday Box Office Update: Franchise Record, Best For Lionsgate In Pandemic Era

John Wick: Chapter 4 debuts at $25.8 million, with a -12% Friday/previews to Saturday trajectory comparable to John Wick Chapter 3. This results in a revised franchise and Lionsgate pandemic opening of $73.5 million.

Worldwide start is also a franchise best, as we predicted, at $137.5M. The Keanu Reeves film debuted at No. 1 in all 71 markets where it was released this weekend.

Internationally, the film grossed an estimated $64 million, exceeding all pre-release projections.

It's Reeves' second-best live-action debut, following Matrix Reloaded's $91.7M in 2003, and it's likely the actor's second-best premiere worldwide, after Matrix Revolutions' $201.4M in 2003.

Only nine films in the last 40 years have set a franchise record with their fourth installment, including John Wick.

Only five of those nine series have done what John Wick has done by building to four features, with each new offering outperforming the prior (i.e., 4 greater than 3, 3 greater than 2, 2 greater than 1).

John Wick: Chapter 4 had the greatest R-rated opening of the post-pandemic era, surpassing Halloween Kills' $49.4M (hampered by a theatrical day-and-date release on streaming site Peacock).

To date, John Wick: Chapter 4 has the second-best domestic opening of 2023, trailing only Disney/Marvel Studios' Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum of Solace ($106.1M).
