$80 Million Chiefs Star Warned to Avoid Bears in Free Agency
The Chicago Bears have a lot of money to spend in free agency, but the team's reputation as a perennial bottom feeder may make some of the biggest fish difficult to land.
Consider Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones, who is set to hit the market in March and might provide a huge assist to the Bears' faltering pass rush.
Jones stayed with the defending champs until 2023, and he recently revealed that this could be his final season.
However, on Wednesday, December 6, Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report advised Jones to avoid Chicago, a stance that is far from unique in NFL media circles.
Through 13 weeks, the Bears have the fewest total sacks (17). They were also last in the category in 2022, producing only 20 sacks.
Jones, a four-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro pick, has 72.5 sacks in his 7.5-year NFL career from the defensive lineman position.
According to Pro Football Reference, he tied a personal record with 15.5 sacks last season and has 7.5 in 11 games played in 2023.
His ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks while still defending against the run has earned him an overall player rating of 80.9, ranking him 11th at the position out of 126 players who have played enough snaps to qualify this season, according to Pro Football Focus.
