THE MATCHUP:   Lake beat Garfield 41-28 in last year’s opener, the first meeting of the teams since 1997. The Rams’ best player, OL-DL Marcus Kidd (6-7, 320), has committed to Akron. RB-LB William Shopshire has a good mix of size, power and speed and S David Gilcreast is a dangerous playmaker and a good tackler in space. “Garfield is very athletic, as always,” Lake coach Dan DeGeorge said. “They’re scary because they can throw the ball over your head and taken broken plays the distance. We really want to make them snap the ball over and over and be consistent.” With a first-year starter in senior QB Owen Goodheart, Lake wants to keep the ball on the ground, giving the Rams a steady dose of senior RB Joel Francis, a three-year letterman who ran for 336 yards and seven TDs last fall. “We’re really preaching taking care of the ball, winning the field position battle and winning the special teams aspects of the game,” DeGeorge said. “We need to be really strong in those areas..
